Punk Rock (a music genre) began in the early 1970’s in New York, the 1970’s was a time when people were becoming rebellious, gone were the days of the hippy sixties people actually had a lot to shout about.
The word Punk was first used by American critics to describe rock garage bands and their followers/fans, it later became a defining cultural statement in the U.K, it was about rejecting mainstream society, rebelling against the pressures of this and the political and economic issues that the U.K were griped by during the seventies..
Many legendary bands were created during the middle to latter part of the seventies starting with bands like the Ramones from New York and the Sex Pistols and the Clash from London.
There was a particular style worn by people that were in to punk rock but the characteristics did differ between each person. It wasn’t unusual to see t-shirts, jeans and motorcycle jackets being worn alongside piercings and tattoos.
[envire_qoute]Punk rock should mean freedom, liking and excepting anything that you like. Playing whatever you want. As sloppy as you want. As long as it’s good and it has passion. ― Kurt Cobain[/envire_qoute]
Punk rock is very much alive and kicking today and is a staple part of mainstream music and culture. From bands like Green Day, Rancid and NOFX that were popular in the nineties to today’s bands like All Time Low, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere and Billy Talent, it shows that there is an eclectic mix of music choices out there for you to enjoy.
Also amongst men the Mohawk hairstyle was very much celebrated for its style and form. Below I have selected punk bands where the band members had very interesting hairstyles. They all look fantastic, edgy and would have required a lot of rock solid hair gel to keep the hair in shape.
